VOLUNTEER:

Facilitators for parent groups.

Volunteers are needed to facilitate parent meetings. New groups are being established across Massachusetts so you can volunteer regardless of where you live. A facilitator is a nurturing, and supportive person who is committed to the mutual support model and parent-as-leader concept. During the weekly group meeting, the facilitator encourages open discussion amongst the parent members and sometimes gives information about resources & services that are available in the community for parents. Total volunteer time is four to five hours per week. Because groups need stable leadership in order to be effective, we ask volunteers to consider facilitating a group only if they plan on doing so for a year.

Telephone counselors on the Parental Stress Line

Volunteers are needed to answer calls from parents who need guidance, information, or sometimes just a sympathetic listener. Counselors are trained to use supportive, non judgemental listening, and give out information and referrals to services in the caller’s area. Training, mentoring, and supervision occurs at our Call Center in Watertown. After training is complete, calls can be answered at home. Because it takes time to become comfortable answering calls on the Stress Line, we ask volunteers to consider doing this service only if they plan on doing it for 140 hours over the course of a year.

Extensive training and supervision is provided. If interested, please contact us at info@parentshelpingparents.org or call 1-800-882-1250 and ask for Lalita.

Child care during parent support meetings

Volunteers are needed to supervise children while their parents attend a support group meeting. Groups meet across Massachusetts so please contact us to see if we have this type of volunteer opportunity in your area.
