Volunteer Spotlight: Camilla, Support Group Facilitator
When parents feel supported, powerful things happen. For Camilla, volunteering with Parents Helping Parents (PHP) is a way to pay forward the support that once made a difference in her own life. Drawing from her personal parenting journey, she now helps create the kind of community that grounded her during challenging times.
Paying It Forward
Camilla began volunteering with PHP in September 2024. As a parent, she vividly remembers how meaningful her own parent group was during a difficult season.
“During some tumultuous years raising our teenager, it was my parent group that kept me grounded,” she reflected. “I gained new skills, perspective, and confidence. It felt important to share what I gained in my group by facilitating PHP groups.”
Her lived experience gives her a unique empathy and insight that resonates with the parents and caregivers who join her group each week.
Inspired by Parents’ Resilience
For Camilla, hearing the impact directly from participants keeps her motivated. “Hearing parents and caregivers say how much the group has helped them during challenging situations” fuels her dedication.
She’s also been moved by watching parents support one another: “Witnessing group members support others during difficult times” has been one of the most meaningful parts of her role as a facilitator.
Creating a Steady Source of Support
Over time, Camilla has seen her group become a reliable anchor for many parents and caregivers. “When parents and caregivers say that they keep going to the group because it's useful to them, centers them, and helps them feel less alone,” she said, “it’s a reminder of why this work matters.”
