Finding Connection Through Community: Alexandra’s Volunteer Story

Alexandra came to Parents Helping Parents with a deep interest in supporting children and families—and a recognition that many parents navigating challenges often feel unseen and unheard.

With a background in developmental psychology and currently pursuing her doctorate at The George Washington University, she was drawn to PHP’s mission of creating spaces where parents can connect without judgment.

“I was immediately drawn in,” she shared. “Parents of children with various challenges often go unseen, unheard, and unsupported—and I wanted to contribute meaningfully in whatever small way I could.”

Since January 2025, Alexandra has been volunteering as a co-leader of the Parents of Children with Anxiety and Depression support group. Over the past year, she has helped create a space where parents can show up as they are—sharing experiences, listening to one another, and building a sense of community.

One of the things that keeps her motivated is seeing that connection grow over time.

“I love seeing some of the same participants return week after week and build community,” she said. “It gives me joy to know these support groups are making a positive difference in their lives.”

For Alexandra, the impact of volunteering is felt not just in the group itself, but in what parents carry with them beyond it.

She reflected, “Something I find really meaningful is hearing how this group helps parents feel less alone and more understood. I love hearing about how they’re finding new ways to cope and create moments of healing and joy—for both their children and themselves.”

Over time, she has seen the group grow from just a few participants each week to a consistent, engaged community of parents. For her, that growth reflects something deeper: trust, connection, and the value of having a space where people feel comfortable returning.

“It’s the biggest compliment,” she shared, “to know that parents value this space and want to come back—not just for support, but to connect with one another.”

In addition to her work with PHP, Alexandra is also a ceramic artist. She hopes to one day bring together her background in art and psychology—exploring how creative, tactile approaches like working with clay can help people process and express emotion.

When asked what she would say to someone considering volunteering, her answer was simple:

“Volunteering with PHP is such a meaningful experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys working with parents and families.”

At Parents Helping Parents, volunteers like Alexandra make it possible for parents to find connection, understanding, and support—often at moments when they need it most.
