Virtual Volunteer Opportunity: Parent Stress Line Counselor

At Parents Helping Parents (PHP), our mission is to empower parents to nurture children and build stronger families. Our Parent Stress Line is a critical part of this mission, providing an anonymous, confidential, and accessible service for anyone caring for a child. This service is a lifeline for parents and caregivers facing a range of issues, from everyday stress to serious crises.

Join Us as a Parent Stress Line Counselor

We are currently seeking compassionate and dedicated individuals to join our team as Parent Stress Line Counselors. As a volunteer counselor, you will respond to calls from parents, childcare providers, grandparents, neighbors, concerned older siblings, foster parents, and babysitters. The topics you might address include parental stress, child development, communication, marital issues, runaway children, substance abuse, and depression. Beyond providing empathy and support, you'll also offer information and referrals to relevant parental support services.

Responsibilities

As a Parent Stress Line Volunteer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Administrative Tasks:

    • Answering calls using our support line app.

    • Tracking calls using our online database.

    • Completing the call record at the time of the call.

  • Time Commitment:

    • Covering at least one 4-hour shift per week.

    • Actively volunteering for at least one year.

    • Participating in an initial 8-hour virtual orientation and training session.

Qualifications

We are looking for volunteers who have:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • An ability to listen more than talk.

  • Comfort with using technology, including computers, tablets, and cell phones.

  • Comfort with online databases.

The Impact of the Parent Stress Line

The Parent Stress Line, operational 24/7, has been a beacon of hope and support since its inception in 1979. It receives approximately 5,000 calls annually, addressing a wide array of concerns.

Our approach is rooted in the ecologic model, which considers a range of factors that contribute to child abuse and neglect. By providing support, information, and referrals, our counselors help callers draw on their inner resources and connect with external resources. This holistic, reflective listening model empowers parents and caregivers to develop their own plans of action, rather than simply offering advice.

Be a Part of Something Meaningful

Volunteering as a Parent Stress Line Counselor is not just a role; it's an opportunity to make a profound difference in the lives of families. You'll be part of a diverse group of volunteers, bringing a variety of perspectives and experiences that enrich our service.

If you have strong communication skills, a compassionate heart, and a desire to support parents in need, we encourage you to apply. Join us in making a difference and helping parents navigate the complexities of raising children.

How to Apply

To apply for the Parent Stress Line Counselor position, please complete the Volunteer Application.

Together, we can support parents, prevent child abuse, and build stronger families. Your volunteer efforts can make a lasting impact. Thank you for considering this meaningful opportunity.
