Volunteer Spotlight: Hannah, Support Group Facilitator

We’re thrilled to spotlight Hannah, one of our dedicated support group facilitators who brings warmth, insight, and a deep commitment to building community every week.

A Passion for Connection and Growth

Hannah began volunteering with Parents Helping Parents in January 2025 as a support group facilitator. A recent graduate of Boston University with a B.S. in Behavior and Health, she has spent years supporting neurodivergent children in various settings. As she applies to medical school, she’s continuing to expand her understanding of families and caregivers.

“I wanted to expand my understanding of the family unit, as a lot of my work has been with kids,” Hannah shared. “What better way to do that than through fostering connection in a support group?”

Making a Meaningful Impact

Every Thursday, Hannah logs on to facilitate her group, and it’s become a highlight of her week. “Coming to session every Thursday and keeping up with our regulars, and seeing how much healing comes from the space I helped to create is the most special thing in the world,” she said.

For many caregivers, these groups offer something that’s hard to find elsewhere: a consistent, understanding community. “Many caregivers come to session without a community of their own — we have become a part of many people’s weekly routine and something they rely on to relax in being seen and understood.”

Lessons Learned Through Volunteering

Through her work with PHP, Hannah has witnessed the transformative power of listening and shared experience. “That shared experience and listening are powerful in healing isolation and doubt,” she reflected. This perspective continues to shape both her personal and professional path.

Advice for Future Volunteers

To anyone considering volunteering, Hannah offers heartfelt encouragement: “It can be daunting to take on this role, but what everyone is looking for is just a space to be heard, listen, and find community. It is much easier than you would think, and more rewarding than you could ever imagine.”

A Fun Fact

When she’s not facilitating groups, you can find Hannah cooking, reading fantasy books, and spending time with her friends and family.
